First Cactus Gardening Company Acknowledged Conforming with the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora

In January, the cactus specialist Uhlig Kakteen in Kernen-Rommelshausen near Stuttgart was registered as the first German gardening company conforming with the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. At this time there is only one more gardening company worldwide that fulfills the required demands.

The registration includes 86 species. That is a large part of all strictly protected species. Matthias Uhlig and Uwe Mergel, the owners of the company, understand the global recognition by the top international control authority of the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora as an appreciation for their efforts in preserving, propagating and disseminating these especially protected species.

The recognition is the result of a comprehensive and intense test of the gardening company with regard to the observance of the Washington Convention.

The company sells cacti and other succulent plants to customers all over the world and to everyone. All plants have been propagated by gardeners. Many of the species are in danger of extinction in nature. The registration facilitates the granting of export permits. For the future, Uhlig hopes for essential simplifications in the trade with controlledly propagated plants of protected species.

The cactus gardeners' assortment includes far over 2000 species. Besides particular rarities, all large species and large specimens are available.

Lovers of cactuses and other succulent plants will find everything here that one can wish for. Plants, beginner's assortments and the corresponding literature can be purchased directly in Rommelshausen or by mail order. An offer list is sent to customers on inquiry.

The protection of endangered species is a part of the company philosophy. Not only the observance of the laws, but beyond that a strict renunciation on the import and sale of wild plants of all species are top principles of the cactus gardeners in Rommelshausen.

CITES, known as "Washington Convention", is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The Washington Convention is supervised on an international level by the CITES secretariat in Lausanne, Switzerland. This institution granted the international notification of Uhlig Kakteen according to the resolution of the conference of the contracting parties (Conf. 9.19) with the registration number P-DE-1001. In Germany, the enforcement authority for the protection of endangered species is the Federal Office for the Protection of Nature.
